England U-21 midfielder Harvey Elliott has been unable to secure an attacking midfield position after losing out in the competition with Hungary midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai.
When he has been on the pitch, he has performed reasonably well, but has not been impressive enough to steal a regular place.
There is also a strong impression that manager Arne Slot is looking for plenty of athleticism and running ability, which continues to be difficult for the former Fulham midfielder, whose speed and physicality are poor in the division. Interest from Brighton and Borussia Dortmund was also reported this winter.
Mick Brown, who has worked as a scout for Manchester United and Tottenham, has suggested that the young midfielder could be on loan next season.
“Liverpool have to decide whether he’s going to be a regular in their side,”
“Does he get into their midfield ahead of the likes of Szoboszlai or Mac Allister?”
“I think they like him as a squad player, who can come in and do a job, and I’m told they have high hopes for his development and future at the club.”
“He’s had one of these spells where he’s been out injured for a prolonged period of time, and now he’s got to prove his form again.”
“Is he going to get into the side enough to do that?”
“I think there’s a possibility he could be allowed to go out on loan next season which would benefit all parties involved.”
“It looks like they’re going to go and sign a new midfielder in the window as well, which is going to do no favours to his position.”
“But Liverpool don’t want to dispense of him because they think there’s more to come.”
“He’s still only young and will need regular game time to get to the level they believe he can get to – so I don’t think a short-term deal can be ruled out.”
“And I wouldn’t expect there to be any shortage of interest in him in that case.”
