Liverpool were eliminated from the Champions League after their defeat against Paris Saint-Germain. Although Liverpool are still the sole runners-up in the Premier League, they have also lost the FA Cup to a lower-ranked side and are struggling in the second half of the season.
In such a team situation, Liverpool changed their mind and challenged for the Carabao Cup final. However, they struggled against a Newcastle United side who played with a lot of passion. A generally poor performance saw them lead by two goals, and although they pulled one back late in the game, they ran out of steam.
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher was scathing in his criticism of the performance. He said it was the worst performance in Liverpool’s history at the finals stage and insisted that at least two attackers must be added for next season.
“I find it difficult to be too critical of this team. I must say that’s one of the worst performances I’ve seen from Liverpool in a cup final going back a long time.”
“They have given so much this season. They are in a position in the Premier League no one really expected. What this last week has done is shone a light on where Liverpool still need to improve.”
“The lack of pace in the team is glaring in the attack. I feel a bit sorry for Mo Salah. He’s taken a bit of stick in the last games against PSG, but he doesn’t get help off the other attackers.”
“The other attackers Liverpool have got are good players not great players.”
“Liverpool need to buy two attackers. Not squad players. Players to hopefully play alongside Mo Salah.”
