Since moving from Hull City, Scottish defender Andy Robertson has formed one of the best sides in the world with academy defender Trent Alexander-Arnold.
He turned 31 in March this year and although he has not performed as well as he did in his prime, he continues to show his experience and smouldering play.
He is no longer physically fit to play too many games due to his age, and Liverpool are working to secure a new left-back, led by Bournemouth defender Milos Kerkez, but they may have to acquire a right-back as well.
The England defender, whose contract expires at the end of the season, is on his way to Real Madrid.
Northern Ireland defender Conor Bradley is waiting in the wings, but has spent a lot of time off the bench through injury, so it is essential to secure a defender who can compete regularly.
Robertson and Alexander-Arnold have often been seen as very close teammates. The Scotland captain opened up about his mate’s departure, saying he was unsure what would happen, but also said he hoped he would be back on the pitch during the season.
“Trent’s head is not great because he’s injured. And Trent hates being injured, that is the way he is. You know, none of us like being injured but I think over the years that I have played with him, it probably hurts Trent a little bit more.”
“He loves being on the grass, he loves playing football, so that’s all he is focused on. It is impossible for me to say we have not seen all the noise and everyone commenting on it and things like that.”
“But for us, our focus is for him to get back fit and healthy and once he does that then hopefully back on the pitch. Once he does that, what will happen [with his future], will happen. No one knows that yet.”
“People can talk and there’s a lot of speculation, everyone is speaking about it. But for us we just want another right-back option back and Trent is a huge player for that and hopefully he is back on the pitch very soon.”
