Discussions with Dutch defender Virgil van Dijk and Liverpool to renew his contract have been ongoing since last summer. Reports are circulating that both want to sign new contracts, but at the moment there have been no pleasing announcements from the clubs.
However, it is possible that a new development has finally taken place. According to Spanish outlet Fichajes, the Dutch centre-back has made a decision on his future and has signed a new two-year contract with Liverpool.
If indeed the news is true, an official announcement should be made by the club soon. The club’s coaches and supporters will be relieved to know that one of the best defenders in the world, who also has the leadership skills to captain Liverpool and the Netherlands national team, will be staying on.
The 33-year-old veteran defender, who joined from Southampton in 2018 and immediately put together the final line, has been almost injury-free and has been a steady defender in every game, except for a period when he injured the cruciate ligament in his right knee and was forced to leave the club for an extended period.
Although he will be 34 years old by the end of this year, he has been an absolute leader of the whole team this season and is clearly an indispensable player for coach Arne Slot.
He is one of the best defenders in Dutch history, but has he really decided to stay at Anfield or will he go down another path…?
