British journalist provides evidence...Federico Chiesa was recommended by Richard Hughes, not Slot Transfers

His time shining as a member of the Italian national team is long gone. Last summer, 27-year-old Federico Chiesa was thought to be on the verge of joining Barcelona after being left out of the Juventus squad, but he joined Liverpool for a fee of around €13 million.

In the new league, he looked set to regain his prime, but poor conditions in the first half of the season meant that he was unable to play even a single match. In the second half of the season he started to get more playing time, but his performances have yet to live up to expectations.

The 27-year-old winger is rumoured to be returning to Italy after only one year, but Paul Gorst of The Liverpool Echo speculated that the player was acquired by sporting director Richard Hughes, rather than the reinforcements desired by manager Arne Slott.

“I’m of the opinion that he wasn’t necessarily a Slot signing.”

“[I think it was] very much Richard Hughes driving that one because of his contacts and expertise in Italian football, coming in as a cut-price, opportunistic one.”

Although he was expected to act as a reserve for Egyptian international Mohamed Salah, he has not been able to fulfil this responsibility at present.

So far his numbers are not good enough, with one goal and two assists, and the only opponent he has scored against is Accrington Stanley.

He has had chances in other games but has failed to find the net, and his struggles in England continue. Can the former Fiorentina forward ever get back to his shining days at Anfield?
