Saudi Arabian side Al Nassr made an attempt to acquire Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez this winter. However, they decided against releasing the Uruguayan striker due to difficulties in securing a replacement. As a result, they brought in Colombian international Jhon Durán from Aston Villa.
However, it is expected that clubs in the Middle East will once again make a move for him, and reports are circulating that Liverpool are open to a sale. Other departures of Federico Chiesa and Diogo Jota are also uncertain, with eyes turning to Spain.
According to Spanish outlet Fichajes, the Merseyside club are interested in Argentine international Diego Simeone, who plays for Atletico Madrid, and would have to pay a fee of €40 million to complete the transfer.
The 22-year-old attacker, whose father is the club’s manager Diego Simeone, has scored four goals and provided five assists in 29 games for the Madrid club this season after loan spells at Real Zaragoza and Alaves.
He mainly plays on the right wing and made his debut for Argentina in November 2024. He can also play as a centre-forward and could replace Italian international Federico Chiesa, who has not exceeded expectations, as a reserve for Mohamed Salah.
However, he still has little experience of playing at the top level. He has played just over 30 La Liga games in total, and this is his first season in the Champions League, and although he has started in seven games, he and his own father have a lot of work to do to develop further.
A challenge in England is unlikely to happen now, and Liverpool are unlikely to be serious about it. The reality is that he will continue to play in Spain, but will he, contrary to expectations, land in the Premier League…?
