Liverpool had an epic few days as the search for Fabinho’s replacement continued. They changed their target from Southampton midfielder Romeo Lavia, whom they had been pursuing, and steered the club toward Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo.
He reached an agreement with Brighton for the highest fee in England’s history, but the Ecuadorian midfielder changed his mind at the last minute. He told Liverpool that he only wanted to move to Chelsea, and with the club of his choice exceeding his offer, he is on the verge of playing in London.
Liverpool, who have been played by a troublesome agent, are now facing the possibility of losing even the 19-year-old midfielder they were originally close to acquiring. Chelsea, as if out of spite, have reached an agreement with Southampton for an offer of around £55 million.

For Chelsea, who also acquired Argentine midfielder Enso Fernandez for an exorbitant fee, a defensive midfielder is not a priority in the acquisition of Caicedo. Liverpool is the only club that wants to get their anchor man, so more developments may be on the horizon.
