After James Milner and others left the team at the end of their contracts, Liverpool began to revamp its midfielders, which had been an issue since last season. Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai were welcomed into the team, and the squad was reasonably competitive.
However, with Jordan Henderson and Fabinho seeking places in Saudi Arabia, the team was looking for a defensive midfielder to replace them, and for the time being, they secured Japanese midfielder Wataru Endo. Amid reports of further midfield reinforcements, Liverpool is also eyeing a left-handed center back.
England U-21 defender Levi Colwill was the top priority, but he has agreed a long-term contract with Chelsea. Portuguese defender Gonzalo Inácio, who signed a new contract with Sporting, and other names were mentioned, but Liverpool are interested in Rennes defender Arthur Theate, according to the L’Equipe.
The Belgian defender, who joined Rennes from Bologna during last summer’s transfer window, scored five goals and assisted one in 42 games last season, and also experienced the Europa League. The 23-year-old center back has also made eight appearances for his country.
The left-handed center back is strong, fast, and aggressive, and also has the passing sense to create opportunities with long feeds up front or to the opposite corner. He could be used as a pure two center back or as the left of a three-back when Trent Alexander-Arnold moves up a row.
He has played more than 30 games in each of the different leagues with different styles of play, such as Serie A, Ligue 1, and Jupiler Pro League, and he seems to have excellent adaptability in each country.
Although he has no experience at a big club, he is a center back with the ability to contribute to the team’s strength.
Will Liverpool be looking for a new defender in the upcoming transfer window?
