Liverpool was top of the class in midfield reconstruction... An Italian journalist explains the transfer drama of the Ryan Gravenberch Transfers

Jordan Henderson, Fabinho, James Milner… After the departure of a number of experienced midfielders, Liverpool undertook a major reshuffling of its midfield, which was continually blamed for its poor performance last season.

After a long and tortuous process of acquiring Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, and Wataru Endo, Liverpool made a last-minute move from Bayern to bring in former Ajax midfielder Ryan Gravenberch as the final piece in their midfield renewal.

The Dutch midfielder has been of interest to Liverpool all summer, and Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, while explaining the reasons for the delay in the player’s desired move, praised the Reds’ midfield renewal as a top-level job well done.

“Why did Liverpool leave it so late to sign Gravenberch? Ultimately this was because Bayern didn’t want to let the player leave in June, July and early August, as I reported throughout the saga,”

“This situation only changed one week ago, and so now Liverpool finally have the player after a crazy summer of changes in midfield.

“It wasn’t an easy situation for the club after Jordan Henderson and Fabinho moved to Saudi, following free transfer exits for James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, but I think the rebuild was excellent – to get Endo, Gravenberch, Mac Allister and Szoboszlai for €160m total package is something top level.”
