Throughout the summer, Liverpool worked to revamp their midfielders, but were also interested in acquiring a new center back. While England defender Levi Colwill, who has renewed his contract with Chelsea, was reportedly the top target, several defenders’ names hit the media.
Ecuadorian defender Piero Hincapie, who plays for Bayer Leverkusen, led by former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso, was one of them.
A left-handed center back of the highest priority, he is a defender with excellent feet who can join the attack not only on the defensive side of the field, but also in the construction of the attack.
While Liverpool is reported to be in the market for him because of his young age of 21, Fabrizio Romano reported that he is only one of the candidates and that no concrete discussions have been seen at this point in time.
“Some Liverpool fans have been asking me about the club’s plans in central defence.”
“There was interest in signing someone in that position during the summer, though in the end there was so much to do in midfield.”
“They focused on that area as a priority and brought in four new players.”
“So, what now? Piero Hincapie is someone who keeps being linked with Liverpool, there’s always this rumour around but at the moment it’s nothing serious or concrete.”
“Liverpool have been scouting many centre backs and also Hincapie is among them, but really nothing else. No negotiations, no direct talks at this stage.”
