At 29 years of age, Scotland defender Andy Robertson has been an absolute regular this season. He has started every game so far in the Premier League and was named captain against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Liverpool is looking to bounce back from last season’s poor form, but their momentum has been undermined by the national team. In the EURO 2024 qualifier for Scotland, Liverpool faced Spain.
The left back, who started as the captain of the team, injured his shoulder in a collision with goalkeeper Unai Simon and had to be replaced midway through the game.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp mentioned the player’s condition at a press conference ahead of the Everton game, where he was undergoing a thorough examination at the hospital.
He explained that surgery was the best course of action as he held discussions with specialists.
“The decision we go towards is surgery.
“There was a little chance we could try without, but after talking to pretty much all the experts it looks like surgery will be the best for the long term.”
“That means he will be out for a while. Don’t know exactly how long, but a shoulder surgery is not an easy one.”
“From my experience, you can train pretty quickly again but not football-specific because you have to be careful with challenges and things.”
“[He] will be out for a while.”
The injury means that Greek defender Kostas Tsimikas will replace him on a regular basis. He has started in the Europa League and cup competitions, but the Everton game will be his first regular appearance this season.
Another candidate is Joe Gomez, who also has experience at left back as a youngster, but his position as a reserve for Trent Alexander-Arnold makes it unrealistic for him to play both.
Therefore, expectations are high for young defender Luke Chambers, who has also reported interest from Leverkusen in cup competitions and other games.
The exact length of his absence is not yet known, but he will be able to overcome the injuries to the mainstays of the team and bite the bullet in the race for the Premier League title.
