Fabio Carvalho, a 21-year-old midfielder, made the step up to Liverpool from Fulham last summer. He was able to start the first half of the season from the middle of the park, but as the year progressed, he hardly played any games and often came off the bench.
The fact that he was used as an unfamiliar left winger, without a position in the top half, which was his forte to begin with, had an effect on his performance. Despite his potential, the former Fulham midfielder once again found himself in a difficult position this season, and he sought an opportunity in Germany.
He joined RB Leipzig, but failed to find regular playing time, starting only one game in the Bundesliga and one in the DFB Pokal. Other than that, he has either been introduced at the end of the season or has not been able to get the playing time he had hoped for.
With the club and the player missing out on opportunities to develop, Liverpool have begun discussions to bring him back to Anfield next January, when he will be released from his loan spell.
“EXCL: Liverpool have opened talks with RB Leipzig to bring Fabio Carvalho back in January due to insufficient game time.”
“Carvalho could start in UCL tonight but he only played 257 total minutes so far — #LFC not happy with this loan.”
“Decision on next steps to be made soon.”
