Jurgen Klopp will leave Liverpool at the end of the season to rest for a while; he has been in charge since October 2015, leaving behind records and memories that will surely be etched in Anfield’s history, and will retire from the team in June 2024.
Successor of a too-great coach is not an easy task. Only Josep Guardiola and Carlo Ancelotti have a similar track record, so the search for a successor will have to be based on an assessment of the potential of the manager.
Among the top candidates being discussed is Xabi Alonso, who is currently in charge of Bayer Leverkusen. He played for Liverpool during his playing days and knows the atmosphere of the stadium and the city. The appointment of an alumnus of the club is likely to motivate supporters as well.
According to Sky Sport Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, Leverkusen, who are aware of Liverpool’s interest in signing Alonso, remain optimistic that he will not leave this summer.
