Sepp van den Berg joined Liverpool in 2019 as a promising young defender, but has been unable to compete in the first team and has had to spend time on loan at Preston North End and Schalke.
The Dutch U-21 defender, who is still on loan at Mainz this season, has a contract with Liverpool until June 2026.
However, at the age of 22, he is approaching a critical point in his career when it is important for him to compete as a player and has hinted that he may leave the club if he is not given the chance to compete on a regular basis.
“If I go back to Liverpool, they might want me to stay. If I see that I won’t get much game time, then I might choose to leave. It’s really important to me that I play,”
“In previous years, I didn’t feel like I would be starting next to Virgil. I don’t know yet what my chances will be like next summer.”
“I think I’m doing well. I can handle playing at Liverpool. I can compete. But being a starter is different. Virgil and Konate are not easy to beat. I know it will be hard.”
