Bayer Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso and Sporting Lisbon’s Ruben Amorim have emerged as candidates to succeed Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool’s manager.
Liverpool’s search for a manager is still in its early stages, but details are slowly being revealed by Chief Executive Billy Hogan.
Alonso, who has had a remarkable season with Leverkusen, is the club’s most pushed candidate. The struggle for the first title in the club’s history, on the other hand, has given Alonso a great deal of leeway and time to decide on his future. Almost all major European clubs are now interested in the Basque manager.
Liverpool, Bayern Munich, and Barcelona are all looking for a coach, and the possibility remains that Manchester United and Real Madrid could be in the same situation.
If Alonso were to move to another club, Amorim is seen as the most likely candidate at this point. The Portuguese manager has guided Sporting to glory after a period of domination by Benfica and Porto.
He is now considered a more viable option than Brighton’s Roberto de Zerbi. Amorim is also attracting interest from major clubs, although not as much as Alonso.
Liverpool is also looking for a sporting director, and the structure is expected to change with Klopp’s departure. The director’s authority will likely be diminished, with more power returning to the technical staff.
