Nicolo Barella is arguably the best midfielder in Italian Serie A, but once again, Liverpool has their eyes on him.
Last summer, the Reds, looking to strengthen their midfield, were reportedly willing to shell out big money to acquire the Inter Milan star.
But they ended up signing players such as Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister, Wataru Endo, and Ryan Gravenberch. All of these players are already playing regularly and are now very successful reinforcements.
Liverpool had a quiet winter, despite reports last December that the Anfield side was trying to sign the Italian midfielder, whose contract at the San Siro expires in 2026.
Now, Liverpool is once again being linked with the player by the media. According to Italian newspaper Il Secolo XIX, Premier League clubs, most likely Liverpool and Manchester City, are preparing a massive £68.4 million offer for the 27-year-old midfielder.
Inter Milan are doing everything in their power to secure an important asset and are trying to convince him to stay at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza beyond 2026 by offering him an unprecedented new contract.
Inter Milan has been dominant this season, leading the Serie A table. The former Cagliari midfielder has been the mainstay of the team, scoring two goals and assisting six in 36 games so far.
He has played over 200 games for the club and over 50 for the Italian national team, and played a key role for the national team at EURO 2020, helping them to victory over England on home soil in the final.
Realistically, Liverpool would not pay that much money, and it is hard to imagine them making a move for the player in the future, as he is not a priority in the transfer market this summer. It seems unlikely that he will play at Anfield, although similar reports have often circulated in the past.
We will only enjoy this as a gossip paper.
