Former England defender Joe Gomez, who has spent his time as the fourth center back, unable to break the stronghold of Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, and Joel Matip, has become Liverpool’s savior after a string of injuries.
During the period when Andy Robertson, Kostas Tsimikas, and other key left backs were out, he performed remarkably well in the same position. With Trent Alexander-Arnold also out, he has been used at right back in some games and has recently broken new ground as a defensive midfielder.
His utility was on display in the recent game against Nottingham Forest, where he started at the bottom of midfield, moved to left back midway through the game, and finally set up the game as a right back.
The 26-year-old defender is at a turning point in his career, and the Daily Mail reported that an inquiry had been conducted by Tottenham Hotspur in the winter transfer market. However, Liverpool rejected the proposal and he remained at Anfield.
With rumors of a return to the England national team flickering due to his recent success, the club has no intention of releasing its oldest member, who is under contract until June 2027.
Although he appears to be a veteran player, he is still only 26 years old and is expected to provide support on and off the pitch during the transition from Jurgen Klopp’s regime.
His pecking order as a center back has never been higher, with youngster Jarell Quansah taking precedence. In addition, it is said that the club is looking to acquire a new center back this summer, which will make the competition even more intense next season.
Liverpool will be facing a new era with a new coach. Can the former Charlton defender win the trust of the new manager and be promoted from a convenient player to an absolute regular?
