This season, at the age of 32, Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk has returned to performing like he did in his prime. In addition to his leadership in organising defenders, he also dominates at the back of the pitch in terms of physicality and speed.
However, he has less than a year left on his contract this summer. Liverpool’s immediate goal is to renew the Dutch defender’s contract, but they are still searching for a new centre-back following the departure of 32-year-old defender Joel Matip.
According to the Sunday Mirror, several clubs, including Borussia Dortmund, have expressed interest in the former Southampton defender, who has a contract until June 2025, and are looking to replace former Germany international Mats Hummels, now 35, as the leader of their final line.
Aside from the Bundesliga, interest has also arrived from Spain, Italy, his native Netherlands and Turkey, who are following the 32-year-old centre-back’s progress. Meanwhile, Liverpool have no intention of releasing the player and he should continue to lead the backline at Anfield next season.
Liverpool will also be negotiating a contract renewal from 2025 throughout the summer, which will determine the future of three other key players, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah, whose contracts are due to expire at the same time.
Will the Dutch captain sign a new contract or will he decide to leave on a free transfer in the summer of 2025…?
