After a spell in Southampton’s lower divisions, he was promoted to the first team in 2006. As he developed his skills at the south of England club, he grew into a player who was also selected for the England national team and secured a move to Liverpool in the summer of 2014.
Although he was often injured at Anfield and did not have a satisfactory career, he scored 22 goals and provided 22 assists in 178 games in total and was loved by his teammates, coaches and supporters for his style of play and character.
In the summer of 2020, his contract expired and he sought a new home at Brighton. It was thought that he would continue at Brighton as a coach or similar, but he left the team at the same time as Roberto De Zerbi this summer.
With all eyes on the player’s departure, The Telegraph reported that he is likely to move to Southampton, who won promotion to the Premier League after winning the play-offs.
