27-year-old defender Nathaniel Phillips joined Liverpool from Bolton in the summer of 2016 and spent much of his career on loan, with little first-team action at Anfield.
He started at Stuttgart and went on to play in multiple leagues with Bournemouth, Celtic and Cardiff, and with a succession of centre-backs in the 2020/21 season, he enjoyed his only substantial second half at Liverpool, showing off his prized heading strength in 20 games.
However, when the main defenders returned, he was not even on the bench for days on end. On the other hand, he has been impressive in the Championship, including Bournemouth and Cardiff, and could receive interest from clubs in the league.
According to The Daily Mail, Liverpool will demand a fee of £8 million from any clubs interested in acquiring him and will not stand in the way of the 27-year-old centre-back’s career, who is in the final year of his contract.
The concern is that the player can only be negotiated on a free transfer after six months, so it is unknown how many clubs will be looking to rush into the transfer market this summer.
It will also be interesting to see whether any clubs will come forward to pay Liverpool’s asking price, which is not a cheap price for the Championship.
