With the departure of Joel Matip, Liverpool have been reduced in the centre-back corps and are also looking for a long-term replacement for 33-year-old Dutch defender Virgil van Dijk, with a new defender likely to join the club this summer.
At the moment, no player has been successfully acquired and it will be interesting to see how Liverpool’s reinforcement department moves forward. In a stalemate, Sky Sport Germany’s Philipp Hinze reported interest in 24-year-old defender Mohamed Simakan from RB Leipzig.
Apart from Liverpool, Atletico Madrid were also following developments and were rumoured to be on the move this summer.
However, David Lynch (English journalist) outright denied the reports. He claimed that he was only suspected of being involved because he was in the Red Bull group and told them that he was not a player they were targeting.
“Mohamed Simakan at RB Leipzig. Profile wise he’s described as a centre-back and a right-back, but my understanding again is that it’s not a player Liverpool are chasing at the moment,”
“You can see why the link came about, Liverpool like versatile players and they like players who’ve been at those Red Bull clubs don’t they?”
“At the moment, Mohamed Simakan is one you can cross out as definitely not a player Liverpool will pursue this summer.”
The 24-year-old defender, who can play at right-back or centre-back, has scored seven goals and provided 13 assists in 120 games for the Bundesliga club. He was also a mainstay last season and played seven Champions League games.
He is happy at RB Leipzig, so a move is unlikely to happen in the coming months, but which defender will Liverpool bring to Anfield…?
