A crescendo in August...Liverpool's Richard Hughes looks ahead to the second half of the transfer market Transfers

Liverpool, with new manager Arne Slot, has replaced its key coaches. Furthermore, the sporting director (SD) responsible for the team’s reinforcement department has also changed.

Richard Hughes joined from Bournemouth as a new SD, after being befriended by Michael Edwards, who arrived as CEO of Fenway Sports Group’s (FSG) football division.

He is said to be targeting centre-backs, wingers and defensive midfielders, and has been linked with a number of players and reportedly approached by agents, but so far has failed to bring anyone to Anfield.

With major tournaments such as EURO 2024 and Copa America taking place this summer, the transfer market has had a difficult July.

And when Hughes touched on the outlook for the market in the coming months, he said that he was hopeful that things would start moving quickly in August.

“When there are major tournaments naturally the attention is there. I think you’ll see a situation in August where clubs are in a hurry to get things done. I see a quiet July, then a crescendo in August.”

It has been a summer of shortages from a supporters’ point of view.

Apart from reinforcements, Liverpool are also waiting to negotiate the contracts of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah, so they are going to have a difficult time so far in all aspects.

Will Liverpool be able to acquire the right people for the right amount of money to strengthen their squad…?
