Better than De Gea...Former Liverpool goalkeeping coach saw what Caoimhin Kelleher was capable of Career

Despite being overshadowed by Brazilian goalkeeper Alisson Becker, Irish goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher is one of the best in the Premier League. He has performed consistently well in the games he has played and has supported Becker during his injury lay-off.

The player, who is turning into a midfielder rather than a youngster at the age of 25, has been linked with a Liverpool exit every time the transfer window has opened in recent years. This winter, Nottingham Forest presented an offer and attempted to sign him, but a move did not materialise.

Although it has been reported that he could move to a new club this summer, Liverpool have no intention of conceding the asking price.

Even if he stays, he is not sure how far he will be able to play, and from a player’s point of view, the mountains would want to join a club where he can secure a regular place in the team.

Former goalkeeping coach John Achterberg, who left Liverpool at the end of last season with manager Jurgen Klopp, mentioned the Irish goalkeeper’s high ability and revealed what he told the young goalkeeper during his time out of action so far.

“Kelleher is the number two but he’s really a number one.”

“I said to Kelleher like five years ago when he had not played too many games, I said, ‘you know you’re better than De Gea, I tell you now, you’re a lot more technical, a lot better at kicking, your reactions are a lot better but you need to play to make it happen.’”

“Hopefully he gets a move because he deserves to be a number one and you know if you have two goalies like that you probably have the best goalie squad Liverpool probably ever had in a number one and two position at the same time – it’s crazy.”
