Former Brazilian midfielder Lucas Leiva spent ten years at Liverpool when he joined from Gremio in the summer of 2007. He was initially hampered by a thick wall of Xabi Alonso and Javier Mascherano, but gradually increased his playing time.
He was a steady performer in the depths of midfield, and towards the end of his career at Anfield he was used as a centre-back and continued to support the team at the back.
His committed style of play endeared him to the supporters and he remains a popular figure even in retirement.
During his ten years at Liverpool, he played alongside a number of star players. In a team with national-class players in every position, he revealed that former England midfielder Steven Gerrard was his “best player”.
“Easy question. Probably Stevie [Gerrard],”
“I played with so many.”
“Suarez as well, and Torres and [Philippe] Coutinho.”
“But Stevie is up there, up there with the best.”

Born in Liverpool, Gerrard grew up in the academy and was almost iconic as a one-club man. His dynamic play brought energy to the midfield and he was a midfielder who could do anything, with top class shooting, passing and defending.
He also led the team as captain and was a key player in winning the Champions League and FA Cup. The former Brazil international’s comments are highly convincing and a good percentage of Liverpool alumni are likely to name the player.
