Arne Slot, who had leveraged the style of play from Jurgen Klopp’s regime, was serious about acquiring Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi as a key player in midfield. After numerous talks and an offer that no Spanish club could match, it looked as if the transfer would be completed.
However, the Spanish midfielder, who was loyal to the club he had grown up with as a child, rejected Liverpool’s offer and decided to stay in La Liga. It is said that there was some emotional persuasion, but the fact remains that the Reds failed to reinforce him.
Sociedad manager Imanol Alguacil was pleased with the decision and said he should be proud of having said no to the big English club.He also said that it is a sign that he feels the club he is at is great.
“We have to be proud of [Martin] Zubimendi, he said no to Liverpool despite the big money they offered him.”
“For me Real Sociedad is the biggest club and I believe Zubimendi thought the same so he decided to reject Liverpool Football Club’s bid.”
He refused to play in the Premier League, which is more competitive and attracts the best players from all over the world.
He also turned down the possibility of winning the league and the Champions League, pledging his future to a club with fond memories. This was probably the result of valuing familiarity over money and prestige.
It was the player’s decision and both are the right choices. Liverpool missed out on the player they wanted, but the odds are increasing that they will not move for another defensive midfielder.
