At the request of manager Arne Slot, Liverpool were serious about acquiring a technical defensive midfielder who could join the attacking build-up from the bottom of midfield, and presented an offer for Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi, but the move did not go through after he decided to stay in Spain.

Despite the good performances of Dutch midfielder Ryan Gravenberch since the start of the Premier League season, Liverpool are interested in a player like Zubimendi to form their ideal midfield and will be back in the transfer market this winter or next summer.

With some reports suggesting that the club have not given up on the Spanish midfielder, they may be looking for a solution in England. According to the Daily Mail, Liverpool and Manchester City are watching the development of Crystal Palace’s England midfielder Adam Warburton.

The 20-year-old defensive midfielder made 16 Premier League appearances when he sought a new home in London from Championship side Blackburn in February 2024. In just six months, he built up his reputation and was named in the England squad for EURO 2024.

In addition to his accurate passing with his left foot, his hard-working defensive response has made him an integral part of the club, and he has started three consecutive games since the start of the season. Together with fellow Three Lions defender Marc Guehi, a number of strong clubs have shown interest.

He has a long-term contract until June 2029 and would likely have to come up with a hefty fee for a move, which would put Liverpool at a disadvantage if City or another club with more money to spend were to enter the fray.

Depending on the release clause, will Liverpool be serious about acquiring a left-footed defensive midfielder…?
