Following Arne Slot’s request, Liverpool set about acquiring Spanish midfielder Martín Zubimendi from Real Sociedad.Despite informing the player that he would pay a release clause and leaving the decision to the player, the 25-year-old defensive midfielder decided to stay at La Real.
However, his club has suffered this season. The whole team is not functioning well, partly because midfielders such as Robin Le Normand and Mikel Merino have been withdrawn and the new players need time to get used to the team and Spanish football.
The Spanish midfielder is already regretting not making the move, as the team is also languishing in the bottom half of the table. According to Estadio Deportivo, Zubimendi is hoping Liverpool will make a move in the transfer market next January.
After missing out on the player, Liverpool converted Dutch midfielder Ryan Gravenberch, leaving him in charge of the bottom of midfield. Although it is still early in the season, the 22-year-old midfielder has continued to live up to Slott’s expectations with performances that have been nothing short of spectacular since last season.
Although reinforcements are less urgent, he has not given up on acquiring a player who can fill the position and is expected to be a serious player in the transfer market this winter and next summer.
