A rare ‘one club man’ in recent years, former England defender Jamie Carragher has made over ‘700’ appearances in total for Liverpool. As a youngster he continued to support the final line as a right-back and then as a centre-back.
He was also appointed vice-captain of the team and continued to lead alongside Steven Gerrard. Although he has lifted trophies in the Champions League and FA Cup, he has never won a Premier League title.
The Liverpool alumnus, who now works as a commentator, looks back on his time at the club and says that with better wingers like Egyptian international Mohamed Salah and Senegalese international Sadio Mane, he could have dreamt of winning the English top flight.
“You go into the Champions League every year with the four English clubs and probably Milan and Barcelona,”
“Real Madrid wasn’t as good at the time.”
“And even though we didn’t win the league, we were still one of the best clubs in Europe for five seasons.”
“For us, we just never had an amazing winger, like a [Cristiano] Ronaldo or a [Ryan] Giggs. If we had one of them, we would have been better. If we had a [Sadio Mane] or a [Mo] Salah back then, we could’ve won the league.”
