Former Cameroon defender Joel Matip, who joined Liverpool from Schalke on a free transfer at the behest of Jurgen Klopp, spent a long spell at Anfield from 2016 to last season, helping the club win the Premier League and Champions League.
The 33-year-old centre-back left Liverpool along with his German manager when his contract expired, but has yet to find a new team and remains unattached. Several clubs, including West Ham United, are interested in him, and he is also being watched from the Italian side.
According to Fichajes, Juventus are looking to sign the former Liverpool veteran centre-back after Brazilian defender Gleison Bremer, a mainstay of their final line, is out for the season with a serious cruciate ligament tear.
He can be acquired on a free transfer and is therefore unaffected by the transfer market. He could be an important asset for the Turin club, as he has played in the Bundesliga and in England and has proven he can play on the European stage.
The problem is that he has been away from the pitch for a while and it will take time for him to regain his conditioning. And the key will be how far his age will allow him to be fit enough to compete in the top flight, even if it is not as intense as the Premier League.
He has been prone to injuries since his time at Anfield, so that is something to keep an eye on. Will Juventus be looking to the former Schalke defender as an emergency reinforcement?
