Liverpool’s first reinforcement in this summer’s transfer market was, unexpectedly, a goalkeeper. They signed Georgia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia, who has been playing in Spain on loan back this season.
The 23-year-old goalkeeper, who has been tipped as the long-term successor to Brazilian goalkeeper Alisson Becker, will be in regular contention at Anfield next season. It should be noted that the current second-choice goalkeeper, Irish goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher is likely to leave the club at the end of the season.
According to ASRomaLive, Liverpool are targeting a player who can handle the goalmouth for the second year in a row and have shown interest in 25-year-old goalkeeper Mile Svilar, who is a member of Roma. Manchester City and Newcastle United are also keen.
The player, a product of Anderlecht’s lower-team, came down to AS Roma in the summer of 2022 after a spell with Benfica. He has been a defender this season and after seven Serie A games, he has started and played a full part in every game.
He has plenty of experience on the European stage, having pitched in 17 matches in the Champions League with Benfica and in the Europa League with Roma, and made his debut for Serbia in 2021, rather than his native Belgium.
Behind this report is Saudi Arabia’s strong interest in Alisson Becker. The Brazilian goalkeeper had been linked with a move this summer, and while he acknowledged the fact, he said he had not even held negotiations due to his attachment to Anfield.
Manager Arne Slot has no intention of letting go of the veteran goalkeeper and plans to keep him under contract until at least June 2027, depending on the departure of 23-year-old goalkeeper Vitezslav Jaros, who is under contract until June 2025, but it seems unlikely that Liverpool will be in the market for a new goalkeeper.
