Liverpool sought a defensive midfielder throughout the summer transfer window. They came close to acquiring Spanish midfielder Martin Zubimendi, but in the end the transfer did not go through. They are still looking for a rival to compete for the position with Dutch midfielder Ryan Gravenberch.
According to TBR Football, Liverpool are watching the development of 20-year-old midfielder Niccolò Pisilli, who is emerging at Roma.Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur, also in the Premier League, are also keeping an eye on developments.
The young midfielder from Roma’s lower divisions can play in both attacking and defensive positions, with central midfield as his central axis.
He has been starting more and more often this season, and after eight Serie A games he has made six appearances, three of which have been on the pitch from kick-off.
He also made his debut for the Italian national team in October 2024 and has had a smooth sailing career. He has started not only in the domestic league but also in the Europa League, and is expected to be the new face of the club after the departure of Francesco Totti and Daniele De Rossi.
Liverpool want a more experienced and proven defensive midfielder. He does not fit that criteria and would be one of the younger slots to acquire. However, with the likes of Trey Nyoni and Tyler Morton in midfield, he is not a priority.
I don’t think the Reds will dare to reinforce from Roma, but with Chelsea’s tendency to secure youngsters in large numbers, a first Premier League challenge is not out of the question.
So how will the transfer rumours surrounding the 20-year-old Italian midfielder end…?
