‘Hard to ignore’ Former Liverpool right-back suggests Trent Alexander-Arnold could go to Spain Transfers

England defender Trent Alexander-Arnold has been a first-team player for Liverpool since his teenage years under Jurgen Klopp. Appointed vice-captain last season, the right-back, who turned 26 this year, has been rocked by contract issues.

His current contract runs until the end of the season. While he has a future as captain at Liverpool, he is also frequently linked with a move to Real Madrid.

It is true that the Spanish giants are targeting him, and rumours are circulating that they will make a move for him this winter, rather than waiting for his contract to expire, due to a number of injuries to the right-back.

Former England defender Glen Johnson, who, like Alexander-Arnold, made his mark as a right-back for Liverpool, has said that no one can turn down an offer from Real Madrid, as if he is close to going to Spain.

“Every big player wants to win everything, they all want to be the best. When clubs like Real Madrid come calling, it’s hard to not be interested.”

“Growing up as kids, nearly everyone wanted to play for Real Madrid. It’s obviously a big club that goes everywhere, as we all know, and they always have done. It’s a realistic opportunity. He could be leaving for free. Obviously, Liverpool fans don’t want him to leave, but if he handles the situation well and leaves on the right terms and doesn’t kick up a fuss, then I think Liverpool fans will be OK.”

“He’s a local lad. He’s a Liverpool legend, won everything. You could understand it and if Liverpool haven’t nailed him down on a new contract, then what’s he supposed to do? He’s got to go somewhere. It’s a complicated one because obviously everyone wants him to stay, but if you’re on a free and Real Madrid come knocking, it’s hard to ignore.”

The Liverpool side do not want to leave and are trying to persuade the future captain to stay. It is impossible for us on the outside to know how far negotiations have progressed or whether they have stalled. This may be due to the fact that various media outlets and journalists have been speculating on their own.

In any case, it is also true that we won’t know what will happen until an official announcement is made. Where does the future lie for the Liverpool-born defender…?
