In Jurgen Klopp’s regime, Liverpool reached the Champions League final twice. In the final against Real Madrid, they failed to win the crown, due to the impact of Mohamed Salah, the Egyptian international who left the field injured after judo by former Spanish defender Sergio Ramos, combined with a mistake by Loris Karius.
The final against Tottenham Hotspur, which came down to revenge. Liverpool got a penalty from a handball early in the game. The kicker was Salah. He calmly scored against France goalkeeper Hugo Lloris to take the lead on the big stage.
Liverpool added to their tally late in the game, and for the sixth time since the Miracle in Istanbul, they had a big year.
Reflecting on the first goal of the match, Egyptian King confessed that he changed his mind just before and made the decision to kick in the opposite direction to the course he had been training on.
“I changed my mind where I put the ball when I was running [up],”
“I practised the whole week for the other side. Then I just took the run like this and then I changed my mind.”
“I felt really bad after that. Even until now every time I see it I say, ‘Why did I change my mind?’ Because sometimes when you take a decision you practise very well and you miss and you don’t feel bad about it because I did everything and you had bad luck.”
“But when you change your mind in a Champions League final… it was too much pressure, to be fair! I just managed to stay calm and shoot the ball inside the net and that’s it.”
