Uruguayan international Darwin Nunez, who scored a number of goals in Portugal, has struggled for goals in Arne Slot’s style of play. His role has changed as a centre-forward and he needs to have the dedication to utilise the players around him, besides aiming for the shot.
As a striker, he still wants to score goals. This season, after 18 games in the Premier League and Champions League, he has scored only three goals, and his momentum in getting close to the opposition’s goalmouth has decreased.
However, this does not mean that he is without chances. Former German midfielder Dietmar Hamann, who also played in England for Liverpool and Manchester City during his career, said that if he had more finishing accuracy, he would be one of the best strikers in the world today.
“If Darwin Nunez had better finishing, he’d be the best player in the world. He has all the attributes you need to be a top striker, he has the physicality and is a nightmare to play against because of his pace and ability in the air.”
“What he needs is a rhythm in the team, which means six or seven games and he hasn’t had that under Arne Slot, it’s hard when he’s competing against so much talent.”
“But he can still be a hugely important player this season and I wouldn’t put it past Slot to make that happen.”

His adaptation to slot football has only just begun, as he is still lost up front and does not possess the same dexterity as Portuguese international Diogo Jota.
At the moment he is yet to become an absolute regular, and with rumours of his departure from Anfield circulating, can the Uruguayan forward become the team’s ace and transform himself into a world-class scorer under the guidance of his Dutch mentor?
