With England defender Trent Alexander-Arnold rocked by contract issues, scouting is underway for a potential successor. While Liverpool’s first priority is a contract extension, if he were to leave, it would only leave Northern Ireland defender Conor Bradley.
According to TBR, Liverpool are looking at new defenders and are interested in Porto’s up-and-coming 18-year-old defender Martim Fernandes. Arsenal Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur are also reportedly following developments.
The young right-back, who made four appearances in Liga Bewin last season, has been in the first team since the start of the season. After 13 games in the domestic league, he has made ‘8’ appearances in the starting line-up and has grabbed a regular place in the team despite being a teenager.
He can also play at left-back and has been on the pitch for seven games for the Portugal U-19 national team. He is a defender with extraordinary talent who could be the future of his country, and is certainly a player to keep an eye on for Liverpool as they look to strengthen their academy.
Even if they were to win, it would be difficult for them to suddenly compete regularly at England’s level of intensity.
He would have to steadily develop his skills in the academy, with a phase of getting used to life in England before taking on the challenge of the first team.
There is no chance that Alexander-Arnold will be available, even if he agrees to a new contract and stays at the club. Will Liverpool and other Premier League clubs be in the hunt?
