With the departure of England defender Trent Alexander-Arnold uncertain, the search is on for his replacement.

Defenders who can compete regularly with Northern Ireland defender Conor Bradley are being looked at, with Bayer Leverkusen’s Dutch defender Jeremie Frimpong reportedly one of the targets.

However, Sky Sport Germany’s Florian Plettenberg is sceptical about the rumours. He revealed that Liverpool rate the player’s ability highly, but said he is not suited to their current style of play and formation.

“Liverpool are impressed by Jeremie Frimpong’s development and performances at Bayer 04 Leverkusen.”

“However, the 24y/o right wing-back is currently not a concrete transfer target for the summer, primarily because Arne Slot prefers a traditional right-back in a back four, and Frimpong’s role does not currently fit into Liverpool’s system.”

The 24-year-old defender, who has been a member of Manchester City’s lower divisions, has played in the Bundesliga since 2021 after a spell with Celtic. Under Xabi Alonso, he also scored a number of goals last season, contributing significantly to the club’s unbeaten run.

The Dutch side-back has quickly attracted the interest of some of Europe’s best clubs, but his physical weaknesses are a concern in the Premier League. He would be more likely to be used as a winger for Liverpool rather than as a defender.

Will the former Celtic defender, who is expected to step up next summer, seek a new home at his next club?
