The battle for the left wing position is fierce, with Colombian international Luis Diaz and Dutch international Cody Gakpo.
It is arguably the most competitive position at the club, and Diaz has recently been given the centre-forward role in an increasing number of games.
The 25-year-old Dutch winger has scored nine goals in 23 games throughout the Premier League and Champions League this season, making him the team’s second highest scorer after Mohamed Salah.
He also scored a goal against Fulham in the previous round, and has been shining in his natural position on the left wing. Former Scotland defender Steve Nicol, who also played for Liverpool during his playing days, said he should replace the Colombian in the regular squad.
“You rightly mention Gakpo, who’s been scoring goals and looks sharp. Anytime he gets the ball at his feet he’s desperate to get after defenders, and defenders hate that, so right now, Gakpo started the season thinking: ‘Will I even get a game?’ To now thinking he probably gets in that starting XI.”
If we talk only about the Premier League, he has started seven of the 15 games, but has been introduced midway through eight of them, so he is not in an absolute position to be considered a starter.
With so many games to play, it is only natural that a rotation should be adopted, but more starters should be used in the domestic league, which is the most important one.
Both Diaz and Gakpo can be a threat in attack from the left wing, so coach Arne Slott will use the one who is in better condition.
