‘The type of player that needs to play every week’ Former Manchester United midfielder defends Andy Robertson Match

Scotland defender Andy Robertson has brought in a number of laurels with manager Jurgen Klopp since 2017, but at the age of 30, his form has been inconsistent this season.

In some games he has been as tenacious defensively as in the past, while in others he has been easily dispossessed.

In the recent game against Fulham, he was red-carded for a fatal mistake and the team could barely hold on for a draw.

He has also lacked concentration, whether due to age or fatigue, and there is talk of a potential successor, with Bournemouth defender Milos Kerkez at the forefront.

Former England midfielder Paul Scholes, who made his mark at Manchester United during his time with the club, has speculated on the Scotland captain’s form and attributed it to the fact that he is a player who conditions himself by playing on a weekly basis.

“I don’t actually think he’s been that bad, you know. [Andy] Robertson. I know he’s made a couple of mistakes obviously. And he looks like the type of player, I know we spoke about this early in the season as well because he was in and out a little bit.”

“I think he’s the type of player that needs to play every week.”

“That’s what will happen, teams will start targeting it. Even if it’s not your weakness but just because what’s happening to him now and he’s making mistakes, people are just going to target that area all the time.”
