The first match of the season welcomed Manchester United to Anfield. Although preliminary predictions were for a complete victory for Liverpool, the game was close. Liverpool’s inability to attack the away team, who were all defending and closing down space, continued.
In such a situation, the first goal was conceded due to a passing error. However, the visitors showed their usual strength and looked like they would turn things around and get the full points, but a slight lapse allowed them to equalise.
The final moments of the game did not reflect the current standings, with the decider coming from England defender Harry Maguire.
The match ended in a draw as it was. Dutch defender Virgil van Dijk, who continued to exhort the final line, which often fell apart in the match, said that the points could have been lost, but that they had to concentrate on the next game.
“It could have been a lot worse if we are absolutely honest with ourselves,”
“They had a big chance in the end that could have been a lot worse than where we are now.”
“I’m definitely disappointed with dropping points at home but it is what is and we have to move on and we will.”
“We found the 2-1 [goal] and then it is about trying to manage the game and keep the ball for longer than three and four passes,”
“We lost the ball too easily at times and then we were more open than we should have been.”
“We’re not perfect, we’re still learning and we have to learn from this as well.”
