Liverpool pursued a defensive midfielder during last summer’s transfer window. Despite reaching an inter-club agreement for Spanish midfielder Martin Zubimendi the 26-year-old midfielder decided to stay at Real Sociedad.
The Dutch midfielder Ryan Gravenberch was converted to save the day, but there is no future for Japan midfielder Wataru Endo to be treated as a regular, and youngsters Tyler Morton and others have not won the trust of the club, and reinforcements are expected to be made this summer.
According to CaughtOffside, Liverpool have turned their sights to Spain and Germany, with Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong and Stuttgart midfielder Angelo Stiller both being eyed.
The 27-year-old Dutch midfielder has been forced out of the starting line-up this season, partly due to the emergence of younger players. He has often started on the pitch in the middle of the game. What’s more, he is said to be available for a fee of just €35 million, and may finally land in England amid rumours of a move to the Premier League for some time.
However, the amount of salary he receives at Barcelona is so high that it is unlikely Liverpool would pay the same amount. As a replacement, they are also interested in German midfielder Angelo Stiller, who has agreed a new contract with Stuttgart until June 2028.
He joined the club from Hoffenheim in the summer of 2023 and was a major contributor to their second-place finish in the Bundesliga. He has already made more than 30 appearances this season and has been a chance-maker while building his game with his prized left foot.
He is also said to have an attractive release clause of €40 million, which could make him a wallet-friendly option for the Merseyside club.
So will the Reds bring in a new midfielder this summer…?
