Liverpool’s search for a successor to Dutch defender Virgil van Dijk is underway, with a list of centre-backs who could take on that heavy role being scouted. They are also believed to be working on a replacement for Andy Robertson, with the search for a defender accelerating this summer.
Throughout last summer, rumours continued to circulate about the recruitment of Slovenian defender Dávid Hancko from Arne Slot’s old club Feyenoord. A left-footed centre-back, he can play as a left-back and fits Liverpool’s requirements.
However, the Merseyside club, who have been unsuccessful in acquiring him, have not added a centre-back to their squad this winter. Liverpool are expected to reinforce with a new defender this summer, but are once again eyeing the 27-year-old Dutch centre-back, according to CaughtOffside.
The Slovenian defender, who stayed in Holland despite rumours of a move to Atletico Madrid and other clubs, has been a regular this season. He has also taken the captain’s mark in several games and has started every game in the Champions League.
Although he is an ideal target in terms of playing style and position, his age of 27 is a bit of a downside. In fact, the Slovenian defender revealed that he couldn’t make the move to Anfield because he couldn’t come to terms with his age and transfer fee.
“I was in contact with the coach, but he immediately told me that it was not possible,”
“Liverpool has a certain transfer philosophy. Age was one problem, the other was the price. Both factors did not speak in my favour.”
