After a not-so-flamboyant transfer market last summer, Liverpool have remained quiet this winter and have closed the market deadline without signing anyone. Arne Slot has stressed that he is happy with his current squad, but is reportedly willing to make a move if the right opportunity arises.

Liverpool, however, have been conducting enquiries under the radar. According to Portuguese newspaper Jornal De Noticias, they, along with Chelsea, also in the Premier League, were closing in on Benfica for Álvaro Carreras and Tomás Araújo.

The Portuguese club did not even respond to enquiries, as they could not afford to lose their main man mid-season. It is also reported that both players have release clauses in place, with Carreras costing €50 million and Araujo €80 million.

Carreras is a 21-year-old left-back who was also linked with a return to Manchester United. He has made more than 30 appearances this season, most of which have been on the pitch from the start of the game. He would be a suitable long-term successor to Andy Robertson, who has been linked with a decline.

Araujo, meanwhile, can play mainly at centre-back and as a right-back. He has been a regular in the team, making 28 appearances, and also made his debut for Portugal in November 2024. He is also 22 years old and can replace Virgil van Dijk or the seemingly unreliable Jarell Quansah.

Chelsea have a massively strengthened squad, but left-back Ben Chilwell has not returned to top form due to a series of injuries and is also awaiting release. In the centre-backs, Wesley Fofana is injured and Levi Colwill is the only one who can be relied upon.

Will Liverpool or Chelsea, looking to strengthen their left-backs and centre-backs, be looking to acquire the Benfica duo again this summer?
