The Premier League’s remaining champions, Wolverhampton Wanderers, were welcomed to Anfield for a battle for survival. Liverpool dominated the first half, going into the break with a two-goal advantage.
However, in the second half they were unable to keep up with the away team who stepped up a gear and created numerous chances.
Liverpool were one goal down and on the defensive. Mohamed Salah’s goal was cancelled out for offside and Diogo Jota’s penalty overturned, but it was no secret that they were unable to attack. Many supporters must have feared a repeat of the Everton game.
Dutch defender Virgil van Dijk admitted that opposition forward Matheus Cunha was a threat, but revealed that there were times when the team floundered. Nevertheless, he said it meant a lot to get a whitewash in such a situation.
“We’d love to dominate for the full 90 minutes but it is the Premier League and Wolves can punish you and create dangerous moments against you. It says a lot we kept fighting and kept going and got the three points.”
“Today showed at times that when we have the ball you can exploit it as well. Cunha was a danger man for them today we had to be aware of. Unfortunately he scored but we kept them to that.”
“I definitely give them credit the way they went one v one most of the times and how they found the free man between the lines.”
“At times we were sloppy as well and we couldn’t keep the ball as well as we can at times.”
