Liverpool were eliminated from the FA Cup after an unexpected defeat against Plymouth Argyle.
The Merseyside derby had a rough go of it after the game, with an equaliser scored in the dying minutes of the match. To shake off the not-so-good run of form, they needed a win against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield.
After an easy win in the first half, they struggled against Wolves, who changed their fighting style at half-time.
They had no shots at all and looked defensive most of the time, reminding me of the Everton game when they were a goal down.
However, Japan midfielder Wataru Endo, who came on in the 71st minute, tightened up a midfield that was beginning to show signs of fatigue.
He made some bold challenges and gave away some fouls near the goal, but his performance was so good that it was hard to believe he had come on in the middle of the game, and he was named Player of the Match.
The Japanese midfielder, who revealed his manager Arne Slot’s intention in bringing him in, said he had accomplished his task and would continue to show what he could do, even if it meant fewer appearances in the future.
“After I came on, the thing I had to do was (to help the team) not concede a goal and to keep it to 2-1,”
“I think I did my job.”
“Their number 10 (Cunha) is a good player so normally I have to take him one v one, defensively I have to go everywhere and follow (him) and cover all over the pitch.”
“We are happy to get three points. It was a very tough game in the end, but we showed we could fight until the end. We got a third goal but it was offside, then a penalty was not allowed and then we conceded.”
“We needed to win because of the games coming twice in a week. We need everyone and of course not only those who are starting.”
“I don’t mind which position I play as I used to play as a defender as well. The thing I can do is to show myself every time when I have a chance.
“I just have to keep working hard and I’m still happy to be a part of this club and I still feel like I can do something for this club.”
