Uruguayan international Darwin Nunez is in his third season at Anfield after moving from Benfica. The 25-year-old striker’s pecking order has continued to drop as the role demanded of the centre-forward has changed from the Jurgen Klopp era to that of manager Arne Slott.
In the Premier League, Arsenal, who are in contention with Liverpool for the title, have been hit by a string of injuries to their front line players and have not been able to field a satisfactory squad.
There were rumours of signing a new attacker this winter, but none have made it into the team.
Former German midfielder Dietmar Hamann, who played for Liverpool and Manchester City during his playing days, pointed out that the Uruguayan forward, whose presence at Anfield is fading, could have been a ray of hope for Arsenal.
“The only real question mark I have about Arsenal’s squad is the centre forward position. And I think even Darwin Nunez, I think Nunez would be gold for Arsenal,”
“Because I think if you’ve got somebody up top who bullies defenders, who draws defenders in, he always gets the attention of two or three defenders.”
“Obviously, he’s a big unit. He’s quick. The game changes. If you’ve got somebody up top with a physical presence, with pace, it’s a different ballgame.”
“They always find space, Arsenal, but it also makes it easier for the likes of [Bukayo] Saka and [Gabriel] Martinelli and [Martin] Odegaard when they get into these pockets because quick players stretch teams. They simply haven’t got it.”
“I think even a Nunez would be a brilliant addition to the squad, but it’s too late for that now and they have to make do with what they have.”
