Liverpool have excellent left-backs in Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas. The Scotland defender has been a regular, up and down the field and has even recorded a number of assists that would not be expected from a defender.
The Greek defender has also lived up to expectations with reasonable performances when he has been on the pitch and has played a sufficient role as a reserve.
However, with the average age of the left-back corps increasing, it makes sense for the Merseyside club to look for a long-term replacement for Robertson.
While the Scottish defender has declined from his prime in terms of athleticism and reaction time, the Greek defender has yet to threaten his place, and the club must look to secure a new generation of side-backs, led by Bournemouth defender Milos Kerkez.
According to the Daily Mail, the Reds have also added 25-year-old Villarreal defender Sergi Cardona to their list and are scouting his performances.
The Spanish side-back, who joined Villarreal on a free transfer from Las Palmas last summer, has been a regular starter in his first season with the club. He has made 26 appearances so far in domestic league and cup competitions, and has been one of the best in La Liga.
Although he has never represented Spain, he has made a total of 117 appearances for his former club. He adds depth to the team’s attack with his aggressive attacking runs and remains focused in defence, stopping opposition attacks with his tackles and interceptions.
He has only professional experience in Spain and has no experience in the Champions League or Europa League.
He has a poor representative record and has played no games on the international stage. His experience at the top level seems to be lacking and he is not a good fit for Liverpool.
At the moment, the Hungarian defender, who has proven himself in the Premier League, and Ajax defender Jorrel Hato, a Dutch talent to watch, are the priority targets, but will Cardona leave Villarreal after only one year and step up to the Premier League?
