‘Slot were on the phone a lot’ Arne Slot is keen to sign Dutch defender Jeremie Frimpong Transfers

With the imminent departure of England defender Trent Alexander-Arnold, Liverpool are in need of a right-back.

Reports are circulating that they have confidence in Conor Bradley, but a difficult decision has to be made to hand a regular place to a young defender with a habit of injuries.

A frequent reported target to replace the Liverpool-born defender is Dutch defender Jeremie Frimpong, who plays for Bayer Leverkusen. Last season, he was on fire for the Bundesliga champions, scoring 14 goals and providing 10 assists.

This season he has not scored as many goals, but his assists are already in double figures. His ability to spark attacks from the right flank goes without saying, making him more of a wing-back than a side-back.

Compared to Alexander-Arnold, he is not a significantly better defender. He is also not as tall and is not as strong in the physical game.

Although he is a good attacker, he is not a direct successor, but coach Arne Slot is keen on the player, according to Christian Falk (German journalist).

“Jeremie Frimpong and Arne Slot were on the phone a lot last month. Both are Dutch, and Slot wanted to sign him in the summer,”

“The Liverpool head coach had been telling the fullback he was still keen to get him.”

“However, he’s very upfront and honest, so Frimpong is aware that, at the moment, a striker and a defender are the main targets for Liverpool who aren’t going to get any fees in for Virgil van Dijk, Mo Salah or Trent Alexander-Arnold should all three leave at the end of their contracts this summer.”

“So, he knows that he’s No.3 on the to-do list for Arne Slot, but if the club can manage to sign both a striker and a defender – he will be the next target. His release clause is nearly €40m, so it’s a lot of money!”
