The transfer market deadline is approaching. As clubs try to secure the missing pieces at the last minute, Liverpool is also looking to further strengthen its midfield and is working to acquire a new midfielder, led by Bayern Munich midfielder Ryan Gravenberch.

In addition, they are also looking to strengthen their final line and continue to focus on left-handed center backs. Meanwhile, a shakeup is also expected to take place, with 26-year-old defender Nathaniel Phillips attracting interest from the Championship, and Tyler Morton and others are likely to be loaned out.

According to French newspaper L’Equipe, Stade Rennes, who currently sit sixth in Ligue 1, are interested in 32-year-old defender Joel Matip, who is losing regular playing time at Liverpool.

He joined Liverpool from Schalke on a free transfer in 2016. The veteran defender, who has competed with Dejan Lovren, Joe Gomez, and Ibrahima Konate for the partner position of Dutch defender Virgil van Dijk, has made over 180 appearances for Anfield in total.

His contract with Liverpool runs through June 2024. He is unlikely to be offered a new contract and, along with Thiago Alcantara, is expected to leave the club next summer. If they can secure a new center back, they may be willing to sell this summer in order to get a little transfer fee.

However, this is not a very realistic plan, as acquiring both an ideal midfielder and center back in a short time is a very difficult task.

The former Cameroon defender is only expected to leave Liverpool next summer, but anything can happen in the transfer market. What will happen to the player’s future?
