Throughout the summer, Liverpool searched high and low for an immediate midfielder. Jordan Henderson and other iconic players under Klopp have left the club and new players have been brought in to replace them in midfield, resulting in a generational change.
At the same time, the club was also looking to acquire a left-handed center back, having had a hot eye on Chelsea defender Levi Colwill in the past. Although the summer ended without any signings, the club is still looking to strengthen the position, with Portuguese defender Gonzalo Inácio and others being mentioned as targets.
In the meantime, 19-year-old defender Lucas Beraldo, who plays for Sao Paulo, is also reported as a target. Although it was never credible and Fabrizio Romano has denied the speculation, Jorge Nicola, a Brazilian journalist, suggested that he would leave in the next transfer period.
“I spoke with Julio Caseres, the president of Sao Paulo, and with someone from Beraldo’s staff (one of his representatives).”
“Julio said that, so far, absolutely nothing has arrived. Neither an enquiry or an offer (from Liverpool).”
“The person from Beraldo’s staff also doesn’t believe in (reports of) such large figures.”
“I think Beraldo will be sold in the next transfer window, at the end of our season here (in Brazil). Sao Paulo needs the money but this value seems very high to me.”YouTube
Joel Matip is turning 32 and his contract expires in June 2024. With his possible departure on a free transfer, securing a new center back is a high priority reinforcement point for Liverpool.
With no left-backs in the current center-back lineup, a defender who can play differently from right-backs would give coach Jurgen Klopp new options.
Who will Liverpool bring into the final lineup this winter or next summer?
