Xabi Alonso lacks experience…Former England goalkeeper points out the weaknesses of Liverpool’s next managerial candidate

Bayern Munich waters down Liverpool's coach search with an interest in the appointment of Xabi Alonso Transfers

Jurgen Klopp, who has been in charge of Anfield since October 2015, will leave the team at the end of the season. The focus now is on who will succeed the great general. While Robert de Zerbi and Ruben Amorim are among the candidates, the battle for Xabi Alonso is heating up.

Bayern Munich, where Thomas Tuchel is scheduled to retire, is also eyeing the Spaniard, raising the possibility that he will change clubs in the summer of 2024 when he takes charge.

The coach, who also played for Liverpool as a player, is popular with supporters, but the former England goalkeeper noted that he lacks experience.

“This season for Xabi Alonso has gone ridiculously well for him and he couldn’t have wished for a better position. With Bayern Munich imploding at present, it looks like he’s going to guide Bayer Leverkusen to their first Bundesliga title in their history,”

“He’s doing amazing things at the moment, but he’s only been a first-team manager for 18 months and he’s not got the longevity that Jurgen Klopp had before moving to Liverpool. Tactically he may be fantastic, but Liverpool may be unsure about whether he can deal with the media side of the job.”

“I think that Liverpool would have had a succession plan for Jurgen, that would have started two or three years ago. As surprising as Jurgen’s announcement was for us all, I believe Liverpool would have already had something in place and whether Xabi was in that conversation from a couple of years ago is difficult to say.”

Xabi Alonso is reportedly concentrating on taking charge of Bayer Leverkusen, a club that is still going strong, but speculation is rife that he is prioritizing his first challenge in England or that he would like to take charge of the absolute champions of the Bundesliga.

At the moment, it seems that the competition is even, but what will the future of the Spanish coach’s career look like…?
